Synthesis gas (syngas) is a gaseous mix containing mainly hydrogen and carbon monoxide. Air Liquide generates syngas from a diverse range of feedstocks, including coal, natural gas, refinery residues and even biomass. Air Liquide supplies syngas via pipeline, as well as related syngas production and purification technologies, to industries such as chemicals, petrochemicals, refining and fertilizers for a variety of applications:

Syngas is also used as an intermediate in producing synthetic petroleum used as a fuel or lubricant. As syngas is combustible, it is often used as a fuel in internal combustion engines.
Gas purification and separation units are key processes for gasification sites in which coal or residue are converted into chemical products. The process performance levels govern upstream equipment size, reliability, maintenance, operating costs and downstream synthesis catalyst lifespan.
